2017 Passel Estate Shiraz

Passel Estate2017 Passel Estate Shiraz

2017 Shiraz

Margaret River, Western Australia

A gentle style of shiraz - plum skin, white pepper and citrus blossoms, blackberries, bruised apricots and wet slate.

    Description

Tasting Notes: Bright red in colour with black flecks. A bouquet of plum skin, white pepper, currants and citrus blossom. A fine and intricately laced tapestry of pristine fruit tannin and soft red fruit acidity on the palate. Focused, poised and relentlessly driven by a medley of black berries, plum flesh and bruised apricots, with minerality and wet slate providing utter elegance on the finish. Drink now for freshness or be rewarded with cellaring.

Winemaking Notes: Picked in the early hours of the morning, our Shiraz fruit was destemmed directly to the fermentors as whole berries, resulting in slower and more controlled extraction of tannin and greater retention of fruit based aromatics. A cool ferment on skins for 14 days was followed by a gentle pressing straight to barrel. The wine was matured for 10 months in a combination of French Oak barriques and puncheons, 30% of which were new, and underwent bâttonage every 5-6 weeks.

This was a vintage that has become a bit of a sleeper. The wines, while in some cases initially closed, are starting to emerge while retaining that smooth harmonious palate. It’s a medium bodied Shiraz from what was quite a cool vintage with lower tannins. It has a peppery, plummy palate showing nice dried herbs and spices. The palate is controlled and tightly held with a neat padding of oak while chalky tannins add their bit to sustain the finish.

Rollicking aromatics. An overtly floral nose with gentle spice and black plum. Seamless fruit and tannin integration on the palate, this sits in that lovely mid weight/almost Syrah like territory with evidence of restraint and composure. From the significantly cooler 2017 vintage, this is very well made. Another stellar example of Shiraz from the region – proving a rightful place in the ‘wines to watch’ space.
